Family
She tied the knot with Randall Hood in 1968. She had earlier been married to Frederick Winfield Opie in 1958.
“Sayonara” and Other Career Highlights
Umeki played Katsumi in the 1957 film, “Sayonara”. Directed by American filmmaker Joshua Logan, the award-winning film had a stellar cast, including Marlon Brando, Patricia Owns, Martha Scott, and James Garner.
On the back of a stellar performance in “Sayonara”, Umeki proceeded to secure further roles. In 1961, she was cast as Mei Li in the musical film “Flower Drum Song”. During the early 1960’s she appeared in films such as ‘The Horizontal Lieutenant” (1962), "Cry for Happy” (1961), and “A Girl named Tamiko” (1963).
Between 1969 and 1972, she performed as Mrs. Livingston in the American sitcom “The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father”.
Honors
She received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for her role in “Flower Drum Song” and was also selected for a Tony Award for “Best Leading Actress in a Musical” for the same role.
Umeki was honored with a Golden Globe Award nomination for her role in “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”.
Death
She died from cancer on August 28, 2007, aged 78.
