About Minnie Pearl
Minnie Pearl was the stage name of country comedian Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon. A former theatre and dance studies major, she began her career as a producer and director for an Atlanta-based touring theatre group.
She was known best for her appearances for over 50 years at the weekly country music stage concert “Grand Ole Opry”. She also performed for 22 years (1969 to 1991) on the television variety show “Hee Haw”.
Family Life
She was raised in the state of Tennessee as the youngest of five sisters. She tied the knot with former Army Air Corps fighter pilot Henry R. Cannon in 1947. He became the manager of her comedy career following their marriage.
Achievements
She was the recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 1992.
Death
She retired in 1991, following a stroke. She passed away in March 1996 from complications of a second stroke attack.
