About Mike Bossy
Michael Dean Bossy was a Canadian pro ice hockey player. He played for the New York Islanders for a decade and played an instrumental role in the team, helping them win the Stanley Cup championships four consecutive times in the 1980s.
Early Life
Bossy grew up in Montreal with his parents Dorothy and Borden, as well as his nine siblings. His father kept an ice rink in the backyard of their apartment building. He began his hockey career at 15 when he joined the junior team Laval National.
Ice Hockey Career
The New York Islanders picked Bossy, after a string of teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers passed him over. In 1978, he scored his first hat-trick in a match against the Washington Capitals. A few days later, he broke the previous rookie record of goals scored in a season and held that title until 1993. Bossy went on to have a successful career with the Islanders until he was forced to retire due to an injury. In 2014, he became a hockey analyst, and a year later joined TVA Sports as a commentator.
Personal Life and Death
Bossy married Lucy Creamer, and they had two daughters together. In 2021, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and died the following year.
