Michael Portillo is a British broadcaster, journalist and former politician whose political career saw him hold a number of important positions such as the Secretary of State for Defense and the Secretary of State for Employment. He also served as an MP for both Enfield Southgate and Kensington and Chelsea. He announced his retirement from politics in 2005 and went on to forge a successful career in the media presenting a number of popular shows, including the Great British Railway Journeys and Great Continental Railway Journeys.

He was born to Cora and Luis Gabriel Portillo. He married Carolyn Eadie in 1982. The marriage did not produce any children.

He once stated in a 1999 interview that during his youthful years, he had "homosexual experiences".
