About Michael Dukakis
Michael Stanley Dukakis entered politics after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1960 as a Brookline, Massachusetts Town Meeting Member. In 1962, he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives and went on to serve four terms.
He was the governor of Massachusetts twice: first from 1975 to 1979 and then from 1983 to 1991. He represented the Democratic Party in the 1988 US presidential elections but lost to George H.W. Bush. He retired from active politics in 1991.
Family Life
His mother, Euterpe Boukis and his obstetrician father, Panos Dukakis were both immigrants from Greece. He has been married to author Katharine Dukakis. They are parents to three, including music executive John Dukakis. Actress Olympia Dukakis is his cousin.
Achievements
The Boys Scouts of America honored him with a Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.
Trivia
After his retirement, he taught at UCLA and Northeastern University as a political science lecturer.
