About Michael Collins
American astronaut Michael Collins served in the United States Air Force Reserves as a test pilot and rose through the ranks to become a major general prior to his NASA recruitment. He joined NASA’s Astronaut Group 3 in October 1963 and participated in two spaceflight expeditions. The first was Gemini 10 in 1966 and the second was Apollo 11, during which he made 30 orbits, became the third American to do a spacewalk and the second person to make a solo orbit on the moon.
Family Life
He grew up as the youngest of four children born to U.S. Army major general, James Lawton Collins and Virginia C. Stewart. He was married to Patricia Finnegan from 1957 until her death in 2014. They had three children, including actress Kate Collins.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Death
He died on 28 April 2021 from cancer aged 90.
