About Metin Oktay
One of Turkey's most prolific goal scorers was Metin Oktay, a Turkish football player known to Galatasaray supporters as the “Uncrowned King”. The striker also played for popular teams such as Palermo and İzmirspor.
Growing Up
The striker came from a very humble home. As a kid, schooling was a major hurdle for Oktay. He instead opted to nurture his football skills in hopes of starting a professional career.
Professional Career
Oktay's prayers were answered as he made his professional debut with the Turkish side İzmirspor in 1964 and represented the team till 1955. The striker later moved to Istanbul-based football club Galatasaray in 1955, playing until 1961. In those years, he recorded more than 170 appearances and scored over 130 goals. Oktay later left the team, moved on to Palermo in 1961, played for a year, and finally returned to Galatasaray in 1962. He played for Galatasaray until his retirement in 1969.
Oktay also represented the Turkey national team from 1954 to 1968, appearing 36 times and scoring 19 goals.
Personal Life
The striker was married to Servet Kardıçalı from 1965 to 1991. Oktay died in 1991 and was survived by 2 children.
