About Meles Zenawi
Meles Zenawi left his university studies in 1975 to pursue politics by joining the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF formed a coalition, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), with three other ethnic nationalist parties to oppose the military dictatorship during the Ethiopian Civil War. The EPRDF won the civil war with Asres as the leader and he assumed office as the interim President of Ethiopia in 1991. He served until 1995, when he was elected as the Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
Family Life
His father, Alemash Ghebreluel was Eritrean and his mother, Zenawi Asres was a Tigrayan. His birth name was Legesse Zenawi Asres. He had five siblings. His wife, Azeb Mesfin used to be a TPLF rebel fighter. He had three children.
Achievements
He received the National Liberation Medal from Rwanda, the Yara Prize for Green Revolution and the CAF Gold Order of Merit amongst others.
Death
He died on August 20, 2012 from an infection while receiving treatment for an illness in Belgium.
