About Mel Tillis
Mel Tillis was a household name during the 1950s through to the 1970s. He began his career as a songwriter and was credited for penning down the lyrics of Webb Pierce’s 1957 track titled "Honky Tong Song".
He rose to stardom with hit tunes like "Coca-Cola Cowboy" and "Good Woman Blues" which were released in the 1970s. He also assembled a backing band named Statesiders which included musicians like Paul Franklin, and Buddy Cannon.
Family
He was born to Lonnie Lee Tillis and Burma Rogers. Between 1957 and 1977, he was married to Doris Tillis. He was survived by six kids including singer Pam Tillis.
Education
He couldn’t complete his education at the University of Florida.
Awards
Tillis received many accolades including the National Medal of Arts, and the Country Music Association Awards' “Entertainer of the Year” prize. He was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Trivia
After his university education, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
He also wrote songs for Brenda Lee, and Ray Price.
