About Maynard Ferguson
Maynard was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for his song “Don’t Stop”. In his very long career, he has worked with various instruments but mostly used the trumpet.
Personal Life and Education.
He was born in Verdun, Quebec in Canada. He earned a scholarship to study music at Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal.
Career Highlights
Motivated by his parents, he played instruments like the piano when he was four years old. He performed on many occasions at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Growing up, it was apparent that he had a zeal for music. As a result, he dropped out from school to pursue his career.
Ferguson joined the Dance Band which was led by Stand Wood and Johnny Holmes. He later moved to the United States and joined the Barnet Band which comprised other trumpeters like Wolf Rolf Ericson, and Ray Wetzel. He was featured on the band’s recording of “All The Things You Are”.
The Canadian trumpeter has worked with instrumentalists like Steve Gadd, Chick Corea and Bobby Militello. The 1970s saw him release albums such as “Primal Scream”, “Conquistador”, “New Vintage”, and “Carnival”.
Honors
In 2003, Ferguson was appointed a member of the Order of Canada.
Ferguson received an honorary doctorate degree from Rowan University in New Jersey.
Death
He died from kidney and liver failure at the age of 78.
