Early Life
Waters was born the fifth child in a family of fourteen. She grew up along with thirteen sibling and a single mother. She worked as a telephone operator to pay her way through college at Los Angeles State College where she majored in sociology in 1971.
Political Career
Waters was elected into the United States congress representing California's 29th congressional district in 1992 and has served in different Committees including the House Financial Services Committee.
She became known nationally when she joined the Rodney King protest in 1992. Waters is noted for being a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, which she chaired from 1997 to 1999 and also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
She was criticized for her comment against Trump’s official as it was inciting violence and was also condemned for her association with former Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
