Background & Education
Schell was born into a Catholic family in Vienna, Austria. However, in 1938, his family fled Vienna due to the "Anschluss." They then resided in Zurich, Switzerland.
Schell read many classics during his stay in Zurich and developed an interest in theatre and acting. By age ten, he could write an entire play.
He read philosophy and art history at the University of Munich and enrolled at the University of Basel and Zurich.
Career
He made his debut in film in 1955 when he landed a role in "Mütter und ein General." In 1958, Schell made his debut as a Hollywood actor in the famous Second World War film, "The Young Lions."
Schell starred in many Nazi-era movies including, "The Man in the Glass Booth" and "Julia." He also played the characters of national leaders and Kings on several stage shows. He is considered one of the greatest portrayers of Hamlets. In addition, Schell had acting and directing credits in over 80 movies.
Awards
In 1961, he was the Best Actor at the Academy Awards. He received the Golden Globe Award, Ondas Award, Bambi Award, and German Film Award. In addition, he was awarded multiple honorary and lifetime achievement awards.
