About Maximilian I of Mexico
Maximilian I of Mexico had achieved an outstanding career as the Austro-Hungarian Navy’s commander-in-chief before being named as the Emperor of Mexico.
A member of the Habsburg-Lorraine house of the Austrian Empire, he was chosen by France’s Emperor Napoleon III to lead a new Mexican monarchy which would be pro-French. He received the invitation following the 1861 invasion of Mexico by France, the United Kingdom and Spain from which the latter two countries withdrew in 1862. He began his reign on April 10, 1864.
Family Life
He was the son of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and Princess Sophie of Bavaria. He was married to Charlotte of Belgium from 1857 until his death.
Death
He was put to death by firing squad on June 19, 1867, a little over a month after the Empire of Mexico collapsed. The collapse was attributed to the withdrawal of French armies from Mexico and help extended from the United States to the Mexican Republican forces.
