About Max Immelmann
Max Immelmann was a German aviator during the First World War. He was the country’s first flying ace during the war. Immelmann joined the army in 1911, but left to continue his education. He rejoined the service three years later and was made a member of the Eisenbahnregiment Nr. 1.
At the beginning of WWI, he was transferred to the Die Fliegertruppe des Deutschen Kaiserreiche. Regarded as one of the most successful fighting aviators of all-time, the German recorded over ten aerial victories. He was also one of the first pilots to record aerial victories with the synchronized gun.
Family
His father died when he was very young. He spent most of his early years with his mother.
Decorations
During his time in the army, he was honored with many accolades including the Iron Cross, Second Class, and the Knight's Cross with Swords of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern. He was also a recipient of the Pour le Mérite, and goes into the history books as the first-ever aviator to be honored with the award.
Trivia
The famous “Immelmann turn” was named after him.
His grave was robbed in 2021.
