About Max Baucus
Max Sieben Baucus served as the Obama administration's ambassador to China from 2014 to 2017. The longest-serving U.S. senator in Montana history, he represented Montana in the Senate as a Democrat from 1978 to 2014.
Family Life
After a year at Minnesota's Carleton College, he transferred to Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1964. He went to Stanford Law School after graduating and earned his Juris Doctor in 1967.
Career
In Washington, D.C, Baucus worked three years as an attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission. He worked as the committee coordinator for the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention. He established a law practice in Missoula, following the Convention, and ran for state representative. As Missoula’s state representative, he won election to the Montana House of Representatives in 1972. Later, in November 1974, he won the general election, and was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 1976.
Political Service
While in the U.S. Senate, the Montana-born politician and diplomat served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation, Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Finance, to name a few.
His nomination as America’s top diplomat to China was made by Former President Obama on January 7, 2014.
Marriages
The former U.S. senator’s marriage to Ann Geracimos lasted from 1975 to 1982. He then married Wanda Minge in 1984. After his second divorce, he married Melodee Hanes in 2011.
