About Matt Doherty
Prior to becoming one of basketball's best coaches, Matthew Francis Doherty played alongside NBA stars James Worthy, Kenny Smith, and Michael Jordan. The American former collegiate basketball coach is highly regarded for his tenure as head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team.

He attended Holy Trinity DHS and played on the 1980 Class A New York State high school boys basketball champion Holy Trinity team.
Career
North Carolina won the 1982 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament and finished with a record of 117 wins and 21 losses during his four seasons as a player. He was chosen 119th overall in the sixth round of the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but his contract was voided, so he never played in the league. He took over the UNC program after one season as the head coach at Notre Dame, and he guided them to the 2001 Regular Season ACC Championship.
He has also served as the head coach at Florida Atlantic Owls, and others, and has worked as a commentator for ESPN and a scout for the Indiana Pacers.
