About Mathew Brady
Mathew Brady is recognized as one of the first photographers in the history of the United States of America. A student of Samuel F.B. Morse, a pioneer of the daguerreotype photography technique, he became known for his pictures of the American Civil War. In 1844, he opened a photography studio in New York City, where he took photos of former American presidents Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams as well as other public figures.
Family Life
He was the last of the three children of Samantha Julia and Andrew Brady, who were Irish immigrants. He was married to Juliet Handy from 1850 until her death in 1887.
Death
He died on January 15, 1896 at New York City’s Presbyterian Hospital’s charity ward, following years of being penniless due to his inability to recoup the $100,000 investment he made in printing photos about the Civil War.
