Mary Leakey was a famous British paleoanthropologist.
Her Work
Mary Leakey did field research from the 1930s all the way into the 1980s. Early in their careers, Mary Leakey and her husband, Louis Leakey, were part of digs in Kenya. In 1948, they discovered fossils of the species Proconsul africanus on Rusinga Island. The Leakeys next found ancient stone tools in northern Tanzania, more specifically Olduvai Gorge in the Serengeti plains. Mary Leakey is perhaps most famous for discovering a Zinjanthropus boisei skull at Olduvai Gorge. Leakey discovered 15 total new species of animals throughout her career before her death in 1996.
