About Mary Alice
Mary Alice is an American actress who’s known for her notable roles in the movies “Malcolm X”, “Awakenings” and “To Sleep with Anger”. Her performance in the latter earned her a nomination for “Best Female Lead” from the Independent Spirit Award.
Personal life and Education
She was born to Sam Smith and Ozelar Smith in Indianola, Mississippi. She went to a training college called Chicago Teachers College.
Career
After completing Chicago Teachers College, Alice taught at an elementary school. Before that, she used to act and participate in state performances in her hometown. She quit teaching and started her acting career in the 1960s. During that time, she participated in community theatres and appeared in plays written by Douglass Turner Ward.
While acting, she washed the clothes of the cast so as to make enough money for herself. Other theatre plays she was involved in include “Fences”, “The Shadow Box” and “No Place to Be Somebody.”
“The Education of Sonny Carson” and Other Highlights
Her television debut came in “The Education of Sonny Carson” in 1974. The movie was directed by Michael Campus and was based on the autobiography of Sonny Carson. She played the role of moms and starred alongside Don Gordon, Paul Benjamin and Joyce Walker.
Other films she featured in include “Beat Street”, “The Bonfire of the Vanities”, “A Perfect World” and “Life with Mikey”.
Also, Mary Alice appeared in television series such as “All My Children”, “Good Times “, “The Family Holvak”, “The Women of Brewster Place '' and “A Different World ''. In the latter, she appeared in 25 episodes out of 144 episodes.
In 2003, she was cast as the Oracle in the critically acclaimed sci-fi action film “The Matrix Revolutions”, which was directed by the Wachowskis and starred Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. She was nominated by Black Reel Award in the category of “Outstanding Actress” for role in the film.
Awards
She won a Tony Award for “Best Feature Actress” in the theater play “Fences”. Alice also received a Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actress” in the Drama Series “I’ll Fly Away” in 1993. Lastly, she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2000.

Mary Alice played the role of “The Oracle” in the 2003 video game “Enter the Matrix” which was developed by Shiny Entertainment.
