About Martin Luther
Martin Luther was a German priest and theologian.
His Highlights/Legacy
He was a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation and he rejected many teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He believed that freedom from God's punishment for sin could not be purchased with money. He challenged the authority of the Pope by teaching that only the Bible is the source of knowledge from God. He also expressed antagonistic views toward Jews.
He was excommunicated by the Pope in 1521.
Lutheranism, a major branch of Protestant Christianity, was named after him and it is now represented by almost 80 million people worldwide.
His Personal Life
He was married to Katharina von Bora and they had 6 children together. She was one of the 12 nuns he had helped escape from the Nimbschen Cistercian convent in 1523.
