About Martin Buber
Martin Buber made a name for himself as a religious philosopher, biblical interpreter and German prose writer. He is remembered best for his philosophy of dialogue which he introduced via his book, “I and Thou” in 1923. A supporter of the Zionist movement, he served as the editor of Die Welt, a pro-Zionism weekly newspaper. He moved to Jerusalem in then-Mandate Palestine in 1938 and went on to serve as a professor of anthropology and introductory sociology at Hebrew University.
Family Life
He was the grandson of Solomon Buber, a Jewish Galician scholar who also raised him from the age of three following his parents’ divorce. His wife, Paula Winkler abandoned her Catholic faith for Judaism. They had two children together.
Achievements
He was a ten-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature and a seven-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.
