About Martha Jefferson
Prior to her union with the third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson, Martha Wayles Skelton was a widow, an heiress, and a mother. Unfortunately, she passed away without seeing her husband become President.
Early Life
Martha Wayles' family was born close to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. She privately did studies in literature, ballet, music, French, and The Bible.
She took up the title of "Lady of the House" after her second stepmother passed away when she was 13 years old. She frequently hosted social events for her father John Wayles and assisted him in running his household and business. She was skilled in producing a number of home items, including soap, candles, and butter. She could also make home remedies for simple ailments.
First Lady of Virginia
Thomas Jefferson, Martha's third cousin, probably started wooing her in December 1770. They were both passionate about reading, music, and riding horses. Thomas and Martha were given a large number of slaves as well as the Elk Hill plantation, where Martha had previously lived with her first husband, as part of Martha's dowry for their marriage.
Death
A few months after giving birth to her last child and 19 years before her husband was elected the third President of the United States, Martha Jefferson passed away at the family's Monticello residence.
Trivia
She was first married to Bathurst Skelton, an attorney. The marriage lasted from 1766 until 1768, when Bathurst died. They had one son together, who died on June 10, 1771.
