Marshall Neilan was a leading filmmaker in the silent film era. The San Bernardino, California-born directed several of Mary Pickford's hit movies, including “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” and “The Little Princess.”
Background
He dropped out of school after his father’s death and pursued an acting career in theater.
Early Career
His earliest film role was as Jim Williams in the Western short “The Stranger at Coyote.” He went on to star in more films, including “Rags,” “Hollywood Boulevard” and “A Star is Born.” In “The Crisis”, a 1916 drama film directed by Colin Campbell, the actor was cast as Clarence Colfax.
Later Years
Neilan later started his own production company Marshall Neilan Productions, which produced top films such as “Bits of Life,” “The Strangers’ Banquet” and “Tanned Legs.” He has featured such stars as Hobart Bosworth, Clair Windsor and John Barrymore on his projects. Early on, he worked for Goldwyn Pictures, American Film Company and Hal Roach Studios. His last directorial credits are “Swing it, Professor” and “Thanks for Listening.”
Personal Life
The director was previously married to actress Gertrude Bambrick with whom he shared a son. Later, he married Blanche Sweet who divorced him after 7 years.
Recognition
In 1955, he received the George Eastman Award for his contributions to the film industry. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
