Marriner Stoddard Eccles was a renowned American economist and banker who served as the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve between 1934 and 1948. Before assuming office, he worked as a board member of the organization.
Eccles started his career by running the industrial businesses of his father. He oversaw the growth of his dad’s banks which led to the formation of the Eccles-Browning Affiliated Banks. He also contributed to the preparation of the 1933 Emergency Banking Act, and was involved in the Bretton Woods monetary system which led to the creation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

He was one of the children of Ellen and David Eccles and had many siblings which included industrialist George S. Eccles. He was married to May Campbell Young between 1913 and 1948.
