About Mario Cuomo
Originally a trained lawyer by profession, Mario Matthew Cuomo had made a name for himself in the New York City area by representing some residents before venturing into politics. Although he lost the bid to become New York’s Lieutenant Governor in 1974, he was appointed as the Secretary of State of New York and served from 1975 to 1978. He eventually became the Lieutenant Governor (1979-1982) before serving for three terms as the Governor of New York (1983-1994).
Family Life
His parents, Immacolata Giordano and Andrea Cuomo were both from the Italian province of Campania. He was a husband to Matilda Cuomo for six decades. They had five children together including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, radiologist Margaret and CNN presenter Chris Cuomo.
Achievements
He was given the Barnard Medal of Distinction by Barnard College.
Death
He died of heart failure on 1st January 2015.
