About Marian Anderson
Marian Anderson was an American classical singer. A contralto, she performed genres such as opera and spirituals and appeared in popular concerts with reputable orchestras across the United States and Europe from the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s.
She was thrown into the international limelight when the Daughters of American Revolution tried to prevent her from performing to a racially-integrated audience in 1939. It became a historical moment when, with the help of then-First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, she sang in front of over 75,000 integrated audiences on 9 April 1939.
Family Life
She was the daughter of Annie Delilah Rucker and John Berkley Anderson. Her 43-year-old marriage to Orpheus H. Fisher ended in 1986, with his death. She did not have any biological children.
Achievements
She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, National Medal of Arts, Congressional Gold Medal and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Death
She died aged 96 from congestive heart failure on 8 April 1993.
