About Maria Theresa
She became the only woman in history to rule the Habsburg dominions. The territories under her reign included Hungary, Austria, Transylvania, Bohemia, Milan, Mantua, Lodomeria and Galicia, Parma and the Austrian Netherlands. She has been praised for her introduction of medical, educational, institutional, law and economic reforms.
Family Life
She was born to Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. She had two younger sisters: Maria Anna and Maria Amalia.
She was married to Francis I, formerly the Duke of Lorraine, from 1736 until his death in 1765. They had 15 children.
Criticism
She has been criticized for being intolerant of other faiths apart from Catholicism, which she practised. She was particularly hateful of the Jews.
Death
She died on 29 November 1780.
