About Margaret Brown
Margaret Brown, also known by the nickname “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, was an American socialite and activist famed for surviving the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912 and for helping other occupants of the sinking ship board lifeboats.
She began to live an affluent lifestyle after her husband came into wealth for making significant contributions to a mining company.
Family Life
She was born to Johanna Collins and John Tobin. She got married to mining engineer and inventor James Joseph “J.J.” Brown in 1886. She and J.J. had two children together before separating in 1909.
She had four siblings and two elder half-siblings.
Other Activities
Her widespread fame afforded her the opportunity to advocate for causes such as workers’ and women’s rights, historic preservation and children’s education.
Facts
She got her famous nickname “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” posthumously after her life was dramatized in the famous 1960 Broadway musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown and its 1964 film adaptation of the same title.
Brown died in her sleep, roughly 20 years after surviving the sinking of the Titanic.
She was portrayed by actress Kathy Bates in the 1997 award-winning film Titanic.
