Marcelo Andres Ríos Mayorga, often called Marcelo Rios, is a retired Chilean accomplished tennis player. Rios is undoubtedly one of the most gifted tennis players in history. He is noted for the exceptional skill and power his left hand produced, earning him the nickname “The lefty from Vitacura.” He was also the first South American tennis player to become World No.1.

He is a native of Santiago, Chile. By age 11, he had learned basic skills in tennis and subsequently trained at the “Sport Frances” golf club in his hometown.
During his amateur career, he won the “1993 Junior US Open” by dropping only one set throughout the entire competition. In addition, he was ranked junior world number 1 in singles.
Professional Career Highlights
He became a professional tennis player in 1994. And he became the first tennis star to win all clay-court “ATP Masters Series” tournaments since 1990.
In 1998, he completed the “Sunshine Double,” winning the Miami Open and Indian Wells Open. In addition, he placed second at the “1998 Australian Open.”
As of 2021, he was the shortest (1.75 m), male tennis player to be ranked world No. 1.
He amassed a 391-192 record in singles and $9,713,711 prize money throughout his career. Following a string of back and leg injuries, he bowed out of professional tennis and retired in 2004, at age 28.
