About Marcelo H. del Pilar
Marcelo Hilario del Pilar y Gatmaitan was his full name and he was a well-known Filipino journalist and lawyer of the 19th century. Pilar was undoubtedly one of the most prominent leaders of Spain’s “Reform Movement”.
Background & Education
He was born in Cupang, Bulacan. Growing up, he loved music and learned the violin and piano during his childhood. He was an alumnus of the “Sr. Hermenegildo flores school” and “Colegio de San José”. He briefly read law at the Universidad de Santo Tomas but unfortunately he was suspended from the institution.
Career Highlights & Major Works
In 1869, he was imprisoned after he aggressively quarreled with a parish priest over baptismal fees. However, in 1882, he co-founded the “Diariong Tagalog” newspaper. He then worked extensively between Malolos and Manila on his controversial “anti-friar” movement in the Philippines.
He wrote the famous manifesto “Viva Espana! Viva el Rey! Viva el Ejercito! FueralosFrailes!” which described the crimes, tortures and atrocities the “friars” committed and demanded that they be expelled from the country. The manifesto was presented to Manila’s Queen Regent. He later became an editor for the “La Solidaridad” newspaper in Spain. In November 1995, President Fidel V. Ramos suggested that Del Pilar be made a National Hero.
Death
He died from tuberculosis at age 45 on July 4, 1896.
