About Marc Garneau
Marc Garneau, whose full name is Joseph Jean-Pierre Marc Garneau, is a renowned Canadian politician and retired astronaut and naval officer. He was the first Canadian citizen to visit outer space (October 5, 1984).
Background & Education
He is a native of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
In 1970, he earned a BSc degree in engineering physics from Canada’s Royal Military College and joined the Canadian Forces Maritime Command. He then received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1973 from the Imperial College of Science and Technology. Between 1974 and 1989, he served as a naval officer.
Space Career
He became Canada’s first citizen to enter outer space when he flew on the US space shuttle “Challenger, STS-41-G” as a payload specialist on October 5, 1984. He retired from the Canadian forces in 1989 to serve as vice director of the Canadian Astronaut Program (CAP).
In 1992, he trained as a mission specialist with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He embarked on two other spaceflights (STS-77 in 1996 and STS-97 in 2000). He has over 670 logging hours in space.
Political Career
He is a Liberal Party member. He was Canada’s minister of foreign affairs between January and October 2021 and transport minister between November 2015 and January 2021.
