Few people can boast of a career spanning more than sixty years. This American playwright and lyricist is best known for his play “The Green Pastures”.
Background
Born to touring actors in 1890, Marc Connelly started writing short plays at the age of five. He attended Trinity Hall in Washington and worked at The Pittsburgh Press to support his widowed mother. It was around this period that he started writing plays for the stage.
Career
Connelly worked with the Morning Telegraph in New York City in 1917. There he met and befriended George S. Kaufman. The duo collaborated on the play “Dulcy” in 1921, and they followed it up with other notable plays like “To the Ladies”, “Merton of the Movies”, and “Beggar on Horseback”.
In 1930, Connelly won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the first all-black cast Broadway play “The Green Pastures”. He also taught drama at Yale University in the 1940s and was a member of the Algonquin Round Table (a group of New York literary minds).
The American writer published his first novel “A Souvenir from Qam” in 1965.
