About Marat Safin
Marat is a retired tennis player and former politician who gained lots of fame during the late-1990s and 2000s. He started pursuing his career as a tennis player in 1997 and rose to the No. 1 spot on Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world ranking within three years.
Marat claimed his maiden Grand Slam title in 2000 when he defeated Pete Sampras at the US Open. He also defeated Lleyton Hewitt to clinch the 2005 Australian Open.
He made another landmark achievement in 2008 when he became Russia's first male tennis player to make it into the semifinals at the Wimbledon Championships. At the time he announced his retirement in November 2009, he was ranked No. 61 on the ATP chart.
Family Life
His parents, Mubin Safin and Rauza Islanova were both former tennis players and coaches. His younger sister is former tennis star Dinara Safina.
Achievements
He claimed the Davis Cup in 2002 and 2006. He also made it to the finals of the 2009 Hopman Cup.
