About Mahavira
Mahavira is revered for his centuries-old teachings, some of which have been passed down through the “Jain Agamas”. He was the 24th Tirthankara (religious leader) of the ancient Indian religion known as Jainism. He reportedly left behind his worldly possessions when he was 30 years old to pursue life as an ascetic and went on to achieve kevala gyana (omniscience) after twelve and a half years of intense meditation. The Jainism religious festival, Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is used to commemorate his birth.
Family Life
He was the son of Siddhartha, a king of the Kshatriya royal family of the Ikshvaku dynasty and his queen, Trishala. He was raised as a prince and it is believed by the Svetambara branch of Jainism that he had a daughter from his marriage at a young age to Yashoda. The Digambara are of the belief that he did not marry Yashoda as his parents had wanted him to.
Death
He died in the present-day Nalanda district of Bihar state, India in 527 BCE.
