About Mahalia Jackson
At a time when the United States was permeated with racial segregation, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson brought together people of different races under single concert halls with her music.
She is credited as an influential figure in the growth of gospel blues across American black churches. She was active for a little over 40 years and first garnered widespread attention in 1947 when she released her version of “Move On Up a Little Higher”. She became the first American gospel act to tour Europe.
Family Life
She was the daughter of Johnny Jackson and Charity Clark, who were never married. She was married twice: first to Isaac Hockenhull from 1935 to 1943 and then to Sigmond Galloway.
Achievements
She was the recipient of four Grammy Awards; one for Lifetime Achievement. She was also inducted into the Hall of Fame of Gospel Music, Rock and Roll and Louisiana Music.
Death
She died on 27 January 1972, while recovering from a bowel obstruction surgery.
