About Lyman Beecher
Lyman Beecher began his clerical works in 1798 after he was given permission by an organization known as the New Haven West Association. The following year, he became an ordained preacher. The American minister gained widespread recognition in 1806 after delivering his iconic sermon at the Presbytery of Long Island. This sermon was later released as “The Remedy for Duelling”.
He was best known as the founder of the American Temperance Society in Boston which was established in 1824.
Family
His parents were Esther Hawley Lyman and David Beecher. The Christian leader divorced Harriet Porter, and Roxana Foote before marrying Lydia Beals in 1836. He was the father of renowned personalities like Charles Beecher, Thomas K. Beecher, Henry Ward Beecher, and Charles Beecher.
Education
He graduated from Yale College in 1797. The following year, he attended the Yale Divinity School.
Trivia
Beecher published a number of literatures with some titled “Sermons Delivered on Various Occasions” and “A Plea for the West”.
