From January 1963 to January 1967, she was the First Lady of Alabama. Wallace had earlier succeeded her husband to become Governor of Alabama. She ran for governorship against Republican U.S. representative James D. Martin of Gadsden. She won the elections with a 63.4% vote against Martin who garnered 31% of votes. She held this position from January 16, 1967 to May 7, 1968.
Achievements
She was the first and only female to become governor, until Kay Ivey became the second woman to succeed as governor in 2017.
Honors
After her death, she was honored with a posthumous induction into the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame.
Death
She died of cancer on May 7, 1968 at the age of 41.
