About Luis Fortuno
The Puerto Rican politician Fortuno also doubled as a historian mainly for his home city Ponce.
His Politics
Fortuna led a demonstration for reduced tariffs from the Ponce Electrical Company in 1936 after which the government’s Autoridad de Energia Electrica de Puerto Rico acquired the company.
He was a Ponce senator between 1937 and 1941 and also contested for the Ponce mayor in 1956 but lost to Carlos Juan Cintron.
Review of his Writings
In 1937, he wrote a comprehensive history of Ponce City and its leadership set in the period between 1692 and 1963. The work was titled “Album Historico de Ponce”; two editions in 1937 and 1963 were published by his own firm Imprenta Fortuño.
He also co-wrote the 1939 “Luareles Postumos Antonio R. Barcelo” with Ramón Fortuño Sellés.
Death and Recognition
Fortuno died from gastric cancer in June 1966 and has since been commemorated at the Parque Del Tricentenario as one of the founding fathers of Ponce.
