About Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois was one of the best French-born female sculptors. She was also a prolific printmaker and painter and is widely remembered for her large-scale sculptures and unique monumental abstract works.
Background & Early Life
She was born in Paris, France, to a family of great tapestry weavers.
In 1930, she enrolled at the "Sorbonne" to read mathematics and graduated in 1935. However, in 1932 she decided to learn art after the sudden death of her mother. She then enrolled at École des Beaux-Arts and École du Louvre to learn art.
Career
She opened her art gallery in 1938. However, she moved to New York with her husband, Robert Goldwater, in the same year and began exhibiting her Feminists and Surrealism artworks in the city. She then continued with her education in Arts at the Art Students League, New York.
In the late 1940s, she began experimenting with several sculptural forms and producing various artworks exhibited in groups and singly.
Louise Bourgeois’ top works
Her most famous works include "The Destruction of the Father," "Spider," and "Maman." In 1992, she was granted the opportunity to have a retrospective show at New York's "Museum of Modern Art." Additionally, in 1999, she received a sculpture award, "Praemium Imperiale," from the Japan Art Association.
Death
She died at age 98 on 31 May 2010, after battling heart disease.
