About Louis XVIII of France
Before Louis Stanislas Xavier became King Louis XVIII of France, he had served as the Count of Provence under the reign of his brother, King Louis XVI. His first official reign (May 1814 - March 1815) was cut short when Napoleon escaped from exile and restored the French Empire. However, when the latter was defeated once again through the Hundred Days War, Louis XVIII was reinstated in July 1815 and reigned until his death in 1824.
Family Life
His parents were Maria Josepha of Saxony and Louis, Dauphin of France. In 1771, he married Marie Josephine of Savoy. They never had any children as her two pregnancies ended in miscarriages. She died in 1810.
Death
His struggles with obesity, gangrene and gout led to a decline in his health beginning from the spring of 1824. He died at the age of 68 on 16 September 1824.
