About Louis XV of France
Louis XV was just five years old when he had to ascend the throne of France after his great-grandfather, Louis XIV died in 1715. Until he came into his own as a ruler in 1743, France was under the rulership of a regent, Philippe II, Duke of Orleans (until 1723) and Chief Minister Cardinal Fleury. He reigned until his death in 1774, bringing his total number of years on the throne to 58.
Family Life
Both his father and grandfather died before they could get the chance to become king. At 15, he got married to Marie Leszczynska, a Polish princess, whose father, King Stanislaus I was deposed. They had two sons and eight daughters together. Only one of the sons, Louis, Dauphin of France, survived his infancy.
Controversy
He became a subject of ridicule amongst France’s aristocrats because of his mistress, Madame du Barry. He has also been criticized by historians for his corruption and misuse of France’s treasury to fund wars.
Death
He died from a suspected case of smallpox on May 10, 1774.
