About Louis Riel
Today, Louis Riel is seen as a hero by the Métis indigenes of Canada, some Canadian minorities and French Canadians in general. He was a politician and leader of the Métis in Canada in the late nineteenth centuries. He is known for having founded the Canadian province of Manitoba and for leading the resistance against Prime Minister John Macdonald’s administration in order to protect the rights of the Métis people.
Family Life
He grew up with ten younger siblings. He was married to Marguerite Monet dite Bellehumeur from 1881 until his death in 1885. They had three children but lost the third in his infancy.
Trial and Execution
For leading the North-West Rebellion of 1885 against the Canadian government, Riel was sentenced to death by hanging on August 1, 1885. He was hanged on November 16, 1885.
Aftermath
His execution caused a bitter resentment amongst Francophone Canadians which negatively impacted the country’s politics for decades.
