About Louis Jolliet
Joliet was a Canadian-born explorer, a cartographer and a king hydrographer who, together with his companion Jacques Marquette, achieved world-renown for being the non-aboriginal duo to travel and map the Mississippi River.
Background
Educated in Jesuit schools, Jolliet served as a priest in his early life.
Expedition
He was commissioned by the governor of New France to explore the Mississippi. He and missionary Jacques Marquette discovered the Mississippi River in 1673. Six years later, he went on another voyage to survey and engage with the Native Americans. His efforts went a long way in improving the trading relations in the Hudson Bay area. In 1694, he was commissioned to map the Labrador Coast and write his impressions of the Island and its people. The explorer also mapped Lake Superior region and parts of the areas around Hudson Bay.
Trivia
During his final years, he served as a professor of hydrography at the University of Quebec.
