About Louis Hirsch
Louis Achille Hirsch was his full name, and he was a famous and highly talented American music composer between the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was also a founding member of the American copyright, licensing, and royalties’ organization, “American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
Background & Early Life
He was born in New York City. The composer received his education from the City College of New York and then studied the piano at Stern Conservatory in Berlin. In 1906, he became a staff pianist at “Tin Pan Alley,” a music publishing house.
Career Highlights
His first professional musical assignment was to write songs for the “Lew Dockstader’s Minstrels.” Hirsch earned critical acclaim when several of his melodies were used as Broadway scores, such as “He Came from Milwaukee,” “It’s Getting Very Dark on Old Broadway,” and “Revue of Revues.”
In 1914, he founded “ASCAP” together with eight other founders. He was the organization’s director from 1917 to 1924. He wrote over 20 musicals during his career.
Controversies
In 1920, he sued the American baseball team “New York Yankees” for $100,000 because officials of the team disallowed him from switching seats in his attempt to avoid sitting close to a cigarette smoker.
Death
He died at age 36, on May 13, 1924, after suffering from pneumonia.
