About Louis Antoine de Saint-Just
French revolutionary and political philosopher Louis Antoine de Saint-Just was known for his dexterity and loyalty to the French political movement at the time. Saint-Just was a Jacobin club leader and a major figure in the French Revolution.
Early Life
Saint-Just was the eldest child of Jean de Saint-Just de Richebourg and Marie-Anne Robinot. He enrolled in the Oratorian school and graduated in 1786. He later pursued law and graduated from Reims University.
Career
The fast-changing pace of events in France in 1789 led Saint-Just to join the cause. He became a Committee of Public Safety member from 1793 to 1794. Saint-Just was also a member of the National Convention from 1792 to 1794. He rose through the ranks to become the 36th President of the National Convention in 1794.
Arrest and Execution
The politician and revolutionist died in 1794. He and his allies, including Maximilien Robespierre, were taken into custody during the 9 Thermidor coup on July 27, 1794. Their death sentences were carried out a day later. Saint-Just and his allies’ demise at the guillotine ushered in some bit of peace and tranquility (i.e. the Thermidorean Reaction) following a turbulent period that historians like to term as the Reign of Terror.
