About Lord Snowdon
Lord Snowdon, whose full name was Antony Robert Charles Armstrong-Jones, was a brilliant 20th-century British filmmaker and photographer. He was famous for his excellent portraits of dignitaries and celebrities. He was also well known for his marriage to “Princess Margaret,” making him the “1st Earl of Snowdon.”
Background & Education
He was born in Belgravia, central London. Affectionately called “Tony” by his relatives during childhood, he attended Sandroyd School and Eton College. He was a skilled boxer during his late teens, winning several amateur bouts. He later enrolled at the University of Cambridge, where he read architecture.
Career Highlights
After graduating from Cambridge, he began his photography and film-making career and then met renowned UK photographer “Baron.” He later became Baron’s partner.
In the 1950s, he painted portraits of “Queen Elizabeth II,” “the Duke of Edinburgh,” and many other dignitaries. His portrait of the “Queen” rock band was used as the “Greatest Hits album” cover.
He won two Emmy Awards for his debut documentary film, “Don’t Count the Candles.” Over a hundred of his portraits have been kept by London’s “National Portrait Gallery.”
Marriage
Between 1960 and 1978, he was married to “Princess Margaret,” sister of “Queen Elizabeth II.” From 1978 to 2000, he was married to Lucy Lindsay-Hogg.
Death
He died aged 86 in Kensington, Central London, on January 13, 2017.
