About Lloyd Bentsen
Lloyd Bentsen, born Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr., was a highly rated American Democratic politician who served as a Senator and Secretary of the US Treasury during the administration of President Bill Clinton between 1971 and 1994.
Background & Education
Bentsen was an Eagle Scout during his youth, earning several awards from the “Boy Scouts of America.” He is an alumnus of Sharyland High School and holds an LLB degree from the University of Texas School of Law. He also enlisted in the US Army and participated in World War II.
Political Career Highlights
Bentsen first won the US House of Representatives election in 1948 and served until 1955. From 1971 to 1993, he served four consecutive terms as a US Senator from Texas. Additionally, he was the chairman of the US Senate Finance Committee between 1987 and 1993.
Bentsen ran alongside Michael Dukakis for the Democratic nomination for vice president in 1988 but was unsuccessful. He also served as US treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1994. In that capacity, he assisted in securing the approval of the “North American Free Trade Agreement.” However, in December 1994, he retired from mainstream politics and Clinton’s Cabinet.
Death
In his later years, Bentsen suffered several strokes and sadly died in 2006.
