About Liu Xiang
Liu Xiang is one of the most celebrated Chinese athletes in history. He is famously known for bringing China its first-ever Olympic gold medal in the men’s “track and field” event during the 2004 Olympics.
Background & Early Career
He was born in Putuo District, Shanghai. He attended a junior sports school in China and initially began athletics as a high jumper. However, at age 15, he switched to hurdle racing and debuted at the 2000 world junior championships. In 2001, he won the 110-meter hurdles event at the World University Games and set a world junior outdoor record of 13.12 seconds in the same event.
Major Career Highlights
He won bronze medals at the outdoor and indoor world championships in 2003 and was named China’s male athlete of the year.
He made history in 2004 when he equaled the world record of 12.91 seconds for a 110-meter hurdles event to become a 2004 Olympic champion.
He was a gold medalist at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Asian Games and a 2007 World champion.
After several injuries and false start mistakes between 2010 and 2015, he announced his retirement as a professional athlete in 2015.

Nike has been a sponsor of his athletic gear, and he is also noted for being a prolocutor for “Cadillac” and “Coca-Cola”.
