About Lisa Murkowski
Lisa Murkowski, born Lisa Ann Murkowski, is undoubtedly one of the most revered American woman politicians in history. As of 2021, she was Alaska's "Senior United States Senator," having held the position since 2002.
Early Life & Education
She was born in Ketchikan, Alaska, and is the daughter of the former governor of Alaska, Frank Murkowski. In 1980, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor (JD) from Willamette University College of Law in 1985. Then she subsequently moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where she practiced law privately and worked as a lawyer for the district's court clerk's office and the "Mayor's Task Force."
Political Career Highlights
In December 2002, her father's decision to appoint her to fill his vacant Senate seat after his retirement was disapproved. However, Lisa went on to win three terms in the US Senate with a majority voting (2004, 2010, and 2016).
She has earned a reputation in the US Senate as a moderate republican. However, she is notably known for breaking with Republicans on social matters, such as backing same-sex marriage and voting to remove the 2010 "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which barred openly homosexual men and women from serving in the US military.
Personal Life
She is Roman Catholic and has two children with Verne Martell, whom she married in 1987.
