Lila Downs is an acclaimed Latin music singer. In addition to making music in Spanish and English, the soloist has sung in Mixtec, Maya and several other native-Mexican languages.
Family and Education
The dynamic musician is the daughter of Mixtec singer Anita Sanchez. Her mother’s talent no doubt rubbed off on Lila. She began singing different genres of traditional Mexican music at an early age.
The gifted singer moved to America with her family in her teenage years, where she learnt English. They moved back to Oaxaca - Mexico when her father – a Scottish-American professor – died.
Lila returned to the US later and studied anthropology at the University of Minnesota. She commuted between Mexico and the US frequently.
The vocalist was involved with Paul Cohen, and they adopted a child after they reportedly tried unsuccessfully to have one of their own.
Music Career
The multi-cultural singer single-handedly recorded her first album “Offrenda” in 1994. Her second album, “Azulao: En vivo con Lila Downs”, was a product of recorded live-sessions with more known musicians in a café-bar in her home-city.
The stellar performer has had five musical tours between 2000 and 2020; and recorded over a dozen albums by the end of 2020. She has also dabbled in acting.
Awards
She won a Grammy Award and five Latin Grammy Awards by her third decade in the industry.
